The oceans of the world are suffering from a danger decrease in vitality. Before 1977 we thought the greatest danger came from chemical pollution. But we began to realise that the drop in animals which feed upon the ocean was much bigger than could be explained by chemical pollution alone.
It became obvious to me that that the decline was because of “mechanical destruction” which means dynamite fishing or sing nets with holes so small they take the little fish as well as adults.
If all this is not changed, we’ll face a catastrophe in the long term. But government makes only short term decisions.
The main role of the ocean is so obvious that nobody talks about it –and that is to sustain life. It does so not by providing food or minerals. But by providing water. Without water there is no life. A majority of ecologists have been accused –sometimes rightly so-of having a negative influence on progress. Every time there is project to build a dam or a generating plant, they say, “ no, no ,no ,. You are going to pollute. “Instead of simply being negative, they need to offer constructive counterproposals. That may sometimes make things more expensive, but it is feasible.
